The Sea of Galilee - romance, history and relaxation
The Sea of Galilee is not really a sea, but a large, fresh water lake in the north of Israel. But this lake is not like any other lake. The Sea of Galilee has a history going back over many thousands of years and was the focus of many events that altered the tide of history. But that’s not all the area has to offer. Surrounded by mountains and lush forests, the Sea of Galilee provides its visitors with an escape route from the hustle and bustle of city life. It provides you with a unique opportunity to relax and replenish your energies and your soul. All its attractions make the Galilee one of the best places for Bed and breakfast Israel hotels.
The Sea of Galilee was many centuries ago, before the Jews were expelled from the land of Israel, the seat of Jewish learning and government. Ancient scholars and rabbis’ from all over the Jewish world would make the long and perilous journey to the Sea of Galilee to study and be part of Jewish culture. Today, the area is the center for the study of Jewish mysticism or Kabbalah and there are many shrines and tombs of ancient scholars that, even today are greatly revered.
For Christians, the Sea of Galilee has a very special significance for it was here that Jesus performed his most notable miracles - the feeding of the five thousand, turning water into wine and walking upon the waters of the Sea of Galilee. The lake is ringed by churches and religious sites many of which, even if you are not a Christian, are imposing and beautiful place to visit.
The area around the Sea of Galilee is full of natural wonders and steeped in history. It is magical area were you will be able to explore and enjoy yourself in a relaxed and laid back atmosphere. Points of interest include the Church of the Beatitudes that overlooks the entire lake, or closer to its shores, the Christian sites of Kfar Nahum and Tabcha where Jesus is reputed to have performed miracles. The area is blessed with lush forests and many well marked nature trails that you can stroll along at your leisure. The hills surrounding the lake also have many tombs of ancient Jewish scholars, many reputed to have special qualities. Don’t miss out on Safed, Rosh Pinna, or Hatzor HaGlilit, three amazing towns each with its own unique characteristics
• The sea (really a lake) is Israel’s largest fresh water lake and supply’s 30% of Israel’s drinking water.
• At 212 meters below sea level, the Sea of Galilee is the lowest body of fresh water in the world, has a maximum depth of 45 meters and covers some 165 square kilometers.
• The lake is fed by a number of streams and underground sources as well as the Jordan River.
So there you have it, the Sea of Galilee in a nutshell. There’s a lot more to do and see in this area than could possibly fit into one article. You’ll have to come and see for yourself.
