concern among Jews around the world about the viability of a Jewish Diaspora. Hundreds of intellectuals, rabbis and scholars and numerous others made their way to the city of Tzfat, which in the 16th century became a place of hope for many Jews. What we know as Jewish thought, prayers and customs today can be traced to Tzfat. Numerous books were written during this period, most importantly the Zohar of the Holy Ari, Rabbi Isaac Luria, who created the version of Kabbalah named for him. All these and other factors transformed Tzfat into the most important spiritual center of the Jewish world. To this day, Tzfat is known for its atmosphere of magic and mystery, accompanied by the anticipation of redemption, and many visit the city for Kabbalah tours, visits to the cemetery, seminars, lessons and other related activities.
